Winter Skincare: How to Treat Dry Hands & Feet - Tips & Moisturizing

A decrease in temperature signifies the onset of winter as well as the decrease in our skin’s natural radiance and moisture levels. However, it is very easy to reverse the adverse effects of winter by ensuring that one follows the following list of winter skincare do’s & don’ts.

Winter Skin Care Do’s:

  • Always moisturise
  • Keep hands covered
  • Use a humidifier
  • Exfoliate
  • Use hydrating masks

  1. Always moisturise : Constant moisturization can help combat dry skin by ensuring that moisture lost due to the cold dry air or constant washes with soap, can be replenished. A product that contains aloe vera gel is the best moisturizer for dry skin.

  2. Keep hands covered : The skin on our hands is one of the thinnest layers of skin on our bodies and is more prone to getting damaged by winter weather. Covering the hands can help prevent the cold dry air from touching the skin, thus preventing unnecessary dryness.

  3. Use a humidifier : Simply increasing the temperature on a heater to beat the cold winter, it is advisable to invest in a humidifier. Dry heat from a heater can also have effects similar to dry cold air on one’s skin. A humidifier on the other hand maintains the moisture levels in your surroundings, so that flakiness caused due to dry skin can become a thing of the past.

  4. Exfoliate: Exfoliation can act as a double-edged sword. It is advisable to exfoliate regularly, but not constantly. Exfoliation allows the dead skin to be removed, thus exposing fresher & younger skin. Doing so also allows your moisturizer to seep deep into your skin, thus keeping it hydrated from within.

  5. Use hydrating masks: Our face has the most amount of skin that is constantly exposed to the elements. Taking this fact into consideration, it is advisable to use a homemade hydrating face mask that acts as a moisturizer, and should be used right after a shower or before going to bed.

Winter Skin Care Dont’s:

  • Take hot showers
  • Use Sulphate based products
  • Wear synthetic fibre based clothes
  • Block skin with excessive makeup
  • Consume caffeinated/aerated beverages
  1. Taking hot showers: Bathing  or taking a shower with hot water may feel very comfortable in the winter cold, however by doing so, you are robbing your skin of the natural lipid barriers that help retain moisture. It is always better to use lukewarm water for a short duration and then follow it up with a moisturizing lotion.

  2. Use Sulphate based products:  Using bathing or beauty products that have a high Sulphate content can be detrimental to your skin in winter. Products that contain some aloe gel can be beneficial as a replacement for most over the counter solutions for dry hands & dry feet.

  3. Wear synthetic fibre based clothes: Synthetic fibres can irritate the skin when sleeping in a heated environment. Dry skin can start flaking and lead to constant itching. An easy way to remedy this is by wearing clothes that are made of cotton or a cotton-flannel blend that has a smooth & soothing effect on the skin.

  4. Block skin with excessive makeup : Minimal makeup is the current trend and following this trend will help you with maintaining skin quality during the winter season. The base layer of makeup should only be applied once the dead, flaky skin has been removed using an exfoliation procedure. Furthermore, if you have dry skin due to the winter cold, apply your makeup by patting gently rather than rubbing it onto the skin.

  5. Consume caffeinated/aerated beverages:  A warm cup of coffee is very inviting on a cold, winter morning. However, it has the potential to wreck your skin in the process. Caffeinated beverages like coffee, tea, soda can be dehydrating for your skin. Caffeine prevents the skin from retaining moisture, thus drying it out. If caffeine is a must, try cutting back on the amount you drink or choose decaffeinated beverages instead. One way to counteract the adverse effects of caffeinated beverages is to make sure you are drinking plenty of water.

Home Remedies For Dry Skin

There are several home remedies that can turn out to be the best moisturizer for dry skin. Some of them are listed below:

  • Coconut oil
  • Homemade Cold Cream
  • Avocado Fat
  • Vitamin B3
  1. Coconut oil : A natural moisturizer, coconut oil can be applied directly to your cracked hands. When covered with gloves, the dry hands can improve within a few weeks.

  2. Homemade Cold Cream  :A combination of beeswax, virgin olive oil, rosewater & lavender essential oil can be used as a cold cream & moisturizer when you’re on the go.

  3. Avocado Fat : Half a mashed avocado, 1 tablespoon of olive oil & 1/8th cup of sugar can help exfoliate the dead skin away while moisturizing the skin revealed. This combination can do wonders for dry hands & dry feet.

  4. Vitamin B3 : B3 is another vitamin that can easily help in repairing damaged skin. Vitamin B3 has the ability to increase the production of Ceramides and fatty acids, which are key components of the skin’s outer protective barrier. Once the barrier is strengthened, the skin itself is better equipped to keep moisture in.
