About Male Pattern Baldness (Androgenic Alopecia)

Male Pattern Baldness is characterized by a receding hair line and hair thinning on the crown. It is caused by hormones and genetic predispositions. The hairline gradually moves backward and forms an M shape. Eventually the hair becomes finer, shorter and thinner, and creates a U-shaped (or horseshoe) pattern of hair around the sides of the head. Male Pattern Baldness, also called Androgenetic Alopecia, is the most common type of baldness. Andro refer to Androgen, the male hormone present in both men and women. The stages of baldness are as shown in the table below.

As can be seen in male pattern baldness, hair on the side and back of the head do not fall out. This is because the hair in this region is not affected by the male hormone – DHT.
