A chemical peel is a dermatological treatment that uses chemical solutions to exfoliate the skin, improving its texture and appearance. The procedure varies based on the type and depth of the peel.

Before the Procedure:

  • The skin is cleansed thoroughly to remove oil, dirt, and makeup.
  • A pre-treatment plan may be recommended, including avoiding sun exposure and using specific skincare products.
  • Certain medications or skincare products may need to be discontinued as advised by the dermatologist.

During the Procedure:

  • A chemical solution is applied to the skin, which may contain glycolic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, or trichloroacetic acid, depending on the peel type.
  • A mild tingling or burning sensation may be felt as the solution works on the skin.
  • The solution is left on the skin for a few minutes, depending on the peel's intensity.
  • For deeper peels, a neutralizing agent may be applied to stop the chemical action.

Immediately After the Procedure:

  • The skin may appear red, tight, or slightly swollen, similar to a sunburn.
  • Mild peeling or flaking typically starts within a few days.
  • A moisturizer and sunscreen will be recommended to protect and soothe the skin.

Recovery and Aftercare:

  • Light peels: Minimal downtime; mild peeling for a few days.
  • Medium peels: Redness and peeling for 5-7 days, with skin sensitivity lasting longer.
  • Deep peels: Longer recovery time, requiring weeks of healing with significant peeling and redness.
  • Strict sun protection is necessary to prevent hyperpigmentation.
