Hair loss or Alopecia is a condition that occurs commonly as one grows older and such hair loss is hereditary.

However, there are several instances where it may be caused due to other factors, both medical as well as non-medical. Hair is known to be made up of many keratinocytes. These keratinocytes are produced by proteins known as keratins, which are produced inside the hair follicles present inside the skin. As and when new hair cells are produced by the keratin, old hair cells are consistently pushed out of the scalp. This would imply that the hair which is visible on our scalp, is actually a string of dead keratinocytes. Thus, each growing hair strand is being controlled by the hair follicle and is being influenced by the age, disease and various other factors related to the body.

Three Phases of Hair Growth:

• Anagen:- (Active Growth Stage of Hair)

Hair grows at a rate of around half an inch per month, and grows faster in the summer than in winter.

The growth phase, or Anagen phase, lasts an average of 3-5 years, which means that full-length hair is an average of 18 to 30 inches long. The Anagen phase generally lasts longer in Asians, going up to around 7 years with the hair growing to a length of 1 metre when proper care is taken.

• Catagen:- (Transitional Phase of Hair)

At the end of the Anagen phase, one’s hair enters the Catagen phase which is a short transitional phase that lasts approximately 10 days.

• Telogen:- (Resting Stage of Hair)

Lastly, the hair enters the Telogen phase, a resting phase when hair is released from the follicle and it falls out. The follicle then remains inactive for 3 months and the whole process is repeated.

Each hair follicle is independent and goes through this cycle at different times, otherwise all your hair would fall out at once. Instead, you only shed a certain number of hair strands a day – up to 80 hair strands on a healthy head of hair. Age-related hair loss is seen in both men and women, though men start balding earlier than women do with the next most common causes of hair fall being lifestyle and stress. Common forms in which hair loss becomes visible to us are:

Thinning of hair on the scalp

Excessive shedding of hair

Receding hair line

Exposed scalp with horseshoe pattern formed by remaining hair

Unusual hair loss on parts of the body such as eye brows, lashes, etc.

Factors or Causes of Hair Fall?

However, as mentioned earlier, there are other factors that can also cause some form of hair loss:

• Harsh hairstyles or treatments :

Hairstyles that consistently pull hair into tight formations as well as those that require the use of chemical products are known to damage the quality of hair, and depending on frequency of use, can lead to permanent hair loss.

• Hormone imbalances

In women, hormonal shifts due to the use of birth control pills, onset of pregnancy, childbirth, menopause or hysterectomy can induce more hair follicles than normal to enter the dormant phase.

• Illness or surgery :

The stress from sickness can prompt the body to temporarily cease nonessential tasks such as hair production. Specific conditions can also trigger it, including thyroid disorders, syphilis, iron deficiency, lupus or severe infection.

• Nutritional deficits:

Heavy dieting or eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia can temporarily stun hair follicles to cease growth. This can also occur due to insufficient intake of required proteins, vitamins or minerals.

Hair loss treatments can either be in the form of Topical Solutions to be applied on the scalp, Anti-Inflammatory Medications that are steroid based creams or injections or Surgery. The type of hair fall therapy required depends on how much hair is gone and how much of a priority it is to mask its absence or replace it.
