Benefits of Skin Toners

What’s the deal with skin toners?
Toners are misunderstood. The purpose of toners was one of pH balancing and removing the stuff from your face that your cleanser didn’t, to achieve squeaky-clean skin. But now, toners are actually quite hydrating and packed with active ingredients to even treat and soothe skin. In fact, a well-formulated toner will deliver anti-aging benefits that rival many of the top moisturisers and serums, making your skin care routine even more effective.
Why should I use a skin toner?
Toners help hydrate the skin and add antioxidants and other nutrients to it while also prepping it to receive the active ingredients that follow in your skin care routine via serums or moisturisers. Also, toners eliminate dead skin cells allowing skin to renew itself.
Which toner is right for me?
Although a good toner will always contain a mix of antioxidants and skin-identical ingredients, keep your skin type in mind to find the right toner for you. Kaya’s toners are alcohol-free and can help remove excess oil from the skin and prevent breakouts for those with acne-prone skin. If you have oily to combination skin, look for formulas that offer light hydration. Toners with Glycerin and Hyaluronic Acid can help hydrate the skin. If your skin is on the dry side, look for toners with richer moisturising agents, including non-fragrant plant oils and phospholipids. If you have normal skin, you can use any well-formulated toner you want.
When and how should I use skin toners?
Use your toner between your cleanser and your moisturiser. Toners, themselves, often contain many active ingredients that can penetrate the skin, but they also allow those from products applied immediately after to piggyback on them. Warm weather can trigger breakouts and toners can help unclog and prevent further breakouts. In fact, while travelling, toners help keep the skin hydrated and not let the travel fatigue set in. A gentle dab on the skin should do the trick; vigorous rubbing should be completely avoided!
Can a toner be hydrating enough to replace my daily moisturiser?
If you have extremely oily skin, you can sometimes get away with skipping a moisturizer in the summertime if you use a toner instead. Sometimes, a good toner can be hydrating enough. At Kaya, we cannot emphasise enough the importance of a good Cleanse-Tone-Moisturise routine though. Each step plays a significant role in keeping your skin young and healthy.
