What is Laser Hair Removal (LHR)?

This treatment uses highly concentrated beams which are lit into your hair follicles. This light is then absorbed by the hair follicles and destroys the hair. This hair removal solution is effective for most skin types. The damaged follicle will not be able to produce any hair for a long period of time. In some cases, several sessions maybe required for the permanent removal of hair. Unwanted hair removal on the face and under your arms can be completed in about 15 minutes. Other areas of your body might require an hour for the treatment to be completed.

What are the Pros and Cons of LHR?

Benefits of Laser Hair Removal:

Laser Hair Removal is beneficial for unwanted hair removal from areas such as the face, leg bikini line etc. Listed below are the pros of using LHR:

• Speed:

The pulse of the laser takes only a fraction of a second to treat multiples hairs at a time. Areas such as the upper lips are smaller and can be treated in about 15 minutes, whereas larger areas such as the back and legs can be treated in an hour.

• Precision :

The laser involved in this treatment is able to target dark and coarse hair selectively. This also helps to eliminate the possibility of ingrown hair. Other than this, it does not affect the surrounding area and leaves your skin undamaged.

Disadvantages of Laser Hair Removal:

Like every other treatment there are both pros and cons for LHR. It is therefore important to know about the cons of laser treatment as well. Listed below are the cons of LHR:

• Expensive:

Since permanent hair removal cannot be done in just one or two sessions it can cost a large sum of money.

• Discoloration:

Though temporary, LHR can sometimes causes hyperpigmentation. These after effects last for a few weeks.

Other Hair Removal Techniques:

Other than LHR, there are other solutions for hair removal as well. Read on below for other body hair removal alternatives with their pros and cons.

Waxing:

In this method, hot wax is applied to a particular area and pulled out in the opposite direction. This method is best suited for hair removal from the bikini area, under arms, legs etc. This method suits coarse and darker hair which tends to be stubborn.

• Pros

This removes hair temporarily from the root for about 3-6 weeks. This is also a faster way of removing body hair.

• Cons

This method is a painful experience for most women. Though it is known to leave your skin smooth and hair free for 3-6 weeks there is hair ingrowth within just the first 2 weeks.

Electrolysis:

This method uses a fine needle-shaped electrode which applies electric current to your hair follicles. This is best suited for smaller areas such as eyebrows, upper lips etc. as it treats each hair follicle individually.

• Pros

This method can permanently remove hair and is suitable for all types. It works on fine and light colored hair, unlike laser treatment which works only on coarse and dark hair.

• Cons

Electrolysis can lead to scarring or discoloration of your skin if done improperly. The treatments are sometimes known to be uncomfortable as they cause a stinging or pricking sensation.

Other than these there are other ways for hair removal such as threading, plucking, shaving etc. Before resorting to a particular method for body hair removal it is always advisable to consult a dermatologist and find out which method works best for your body and hair type.
