Summer Hair Care Tips: Protect Your Locks

With the arrival of summer, most of us plan for relaxed vacations and escape to hill stations to beat the heat. But for those of us who cannot manage leaves and have to tackle the atrocious summers, life is not easy! Along with various health issues that arise during this time, our hair too takes a beating.

It is made up of 10 to 15% of water and on hot summery days, part of this moisture evaporates. Heat from the sun also damages the protective protein present in hair, which can render your luscious locks brittle and dull. Extreme heat can even damage hair follicles leading to frizzy hair. Also, if you are a water baby, the sea (saltwater) and pool (chlorine) will make your hair look dry and dead.

So what can you do to protect your locks against summer heat and keep it healthy and strong forever? Let's take a look.

Moisturize Your Hair

Yes, just like the rest of the year, hair needs nourishment during summers as well. It helps retain moisture and fight frizz. So use a good hair gel which adds moisture to your hair and imparts protein. Best ones are the leave-in ones. Kaya's Health Gel has herbal extracts like Saw Palmetto, Gingko biloba and Hibiscus which provide essential proteins and minerals thus promoting stronger, beautiful hair.

Shampoo and Nourish Your Hair

During summer, scalp tends to get oily as heat prompts to overwork the sebaceous glands. It leads to the production of more oil and sweat, making your hair dirtier. So you eventually end up washing your hair more frequently. Excess washing is also harmful if a shampoo does not suit you. It could lead to hair-fall, breakage and excessively entangled hair. But, Kaya's Nourishing Shampoo is mild enough to be used every day. It has Hibiscus extracts which adds lustre to your hair and almond oil which prevents breakage.

Avoid Dandruff

Due to sebaceous glands on an overdrive, your hair will be greasier and attract more dirt. This will lead to an itchy scalp, scaling and invariably, to dandruff. Use an anti-dandruff shampoo or lotion, that will prevent dandruff. Regular use of Kaya's Anti Dandruff Lotion with OT complex can effectively curb dandruff and reduce itching. It also nourishes and conditions your scalp.Besides following suggestions and products, protect your hair from the scorching sun. Cover your hair with a scarf, hat or a cap when you are out for long hours. Make sure it does not wrap around your head too tight, else it can restrict blood circulation. If you plan to head for daily swim to the pool, prep your hair by rinsing it with tap water both before and after swimming. This is because chlorine builds up a residue on your hair making it dry and brittle. Do wear a swimming cap to further protect your hair. Also, irrespective of whether you swim or not, tie up your hair in a braid or bun or ponytail.Summer is the best time to head for a trim as hair grows fast; so just head to your favourite hair salon. Split ends are more likely to occur during summer as hair dries easily and therefore, trimming helps.Looking after your hair in the summer is not as difficult as it seems and with these tips, you will be able to maintain your luscious locks no matter what.

Intense Drying Leads to Hair Breakage

Post wash we always use a towel to dry the hair and end up rubbing the hair too much, which damages the cuticles, leading to breakage. Just pat you hair with a towel and run your fingers through the strands. It will take longer to dry, but it will be healthier in the long term.

Avoid Too much brushing

Most of us have been told to brush hair at least100 strokes each night. But guess that's too much. Over-brushing can make your hair static, which can lead to split ends and breakage. Brush only when required, and ensure you are using the right kind of brush for your hair.

Avoid Brushing Wet Hair

Do not ever brush you hair when it is wet. Hair is the weakest when wet. Opt for a wide-tooth comb, which will not damage your hair like a brush can. Begin at the bottom, and work your way up, while your hair is still wet, and be gentle if your hair is tangled.
