What Causes Age Spots Or Liver Spots?

Age Spots or Liver Spots is an unobtrusive skin condition that is caused due to excessive production of melanin in the body. Staying out in the sun for long durations is a good thing as it allows your body to get its quota of Vitamin-D, however once the body is saturated with Vitamin-D, exposure to the sun can be harmful.

Identify Age Spots or Liver Spots :

These spots may be brown, grey or black in colour, and are usually flat on the surface of the skin. They are commonly found on a person’s face, forearms, shoulders, upper back and the back of one’s hands, which are all areas that are continuously exposed to the sun.
It’s usually very hard to make out if you have developed liver spots on your body unless you can visibly see a difference in skin colour in the areas that are commonly exposed to the sun. As compared to other skin conditions, age spots are painless and have the same texture as the rest of one’s skin.
The only way for a doctor to diagnose this condition is to carefully observe the skin of those who are most prone to it. Factors such as being above the age of 40, or having extremely fair skin play an important role in determining whether one is susceptible to developing liver spots.

Treatment For Age Spots or Liver Spots :

Age spots aren’t dangerous and don’t cause any health problems therefore treatment isn’t necessary as such. However, some people wish to remove them because they might not like the way they look.Using bleach creams to fade the age spots gradually over a period of several months is the most common prescribed method of age spot removal. Using bleach cream requires one to wear sunscreen at all times during treatment. However, bleaching creams are known to make your skin more sensitive to UV damage. There are several medical procedures that can treat age spots, each carrying a risk of side effects and complications. It is advised that your dermatologist or plastic surgeon should help you understand the pros and cons of each and therefore decide which treatment is the most appropriate for your skin.

Medical procedures for age spots include:

• Laser treatment to destroy melanin producing cells.

• Deep chemical peel treatments to burn away the outer layer of skin, allowing new skin to grow in its place.

• Dermabrasion, which rubs off the outer layers of the skin to promote growth of new skin in its place.

• Cryosurgery, which freezes age spots with liquid nitrogen.

• The final option has the fewest side effects, but is also more expensive than other treatments. Laser treatment can remove age spots by destroying the cells that produce the pigment. This treatment would probably not hurt your skin, but it requires several sessions as the results aren't immediate. Sometimes it may take months for a single age spot to disappear.

What Kaya Recommends:

Many over-the-counter creams are available in the market allowing one to treat liver spots at home. These creams aren’t as strong as prescription creams thus they won’t be as capable of effectively removing excess skin pigmentation.
If you want to use an over-the-counter cream, choose one that contains Hydroquionone, Deoxyarbutin, Glycolic Acid, Alpha Hydroxy Acid or Kojic Acid.
